Some orchids have developed alternative forms of pollination which are very interesting. The slipper-like lip of the Cypripedium species is an elaborate pit trap with a smooth surface.

Visitors which land on the lip fall into the slipper and have only one escape route left, two narrow tunnels in the rear part of the slipper. On their way out, they must crawl past the stigma and the stamen. Cypripedium has free pollen, so the insects are completely covered with pollen dust when they finally manage to escape.

Sometimes small spiders build their webs inside the slipper and change the lip into a deadly trap!
