This small and inconspicious orchid can be found in mossy forests with acidic soil, often hidden between blueberries or cranberries.

It's the only european species of about 100 in the world, except for an endemite on Madeira, G. macrophylla.

Two american species which are a little more attractive, are G. pubescens and G. oblongifolia.

All three species have creeping rhizoms and net ornaments on the leaves. They can be cultivated in a shady bed with lime soil and a cover of bark and leaves.
