In sandy dunes with lime in the sand, this beautiful Epipactis species can be found. It grows sometimes in the inland, but it can be found more often near the coasts.
The blossoms are relatively small, but they have a bright purple-red color and an intensive smell like vanilla.
Epipactis atrorubens can be cultivated, is is a moderately difficult species. With a little luck, the short rhizoms can be transplanted into a sunny lime or sand bed which should be kept not too wet. Light shade from trees or bushes is being appreciated.
