This is an orchid which can be found in many different biotopes. Nevertheless, it is extremely rare in middle Europe. It can be found in semi-dry meadows, sunny forests and moist meadows on lime and neutral underground.
The red-brown blossoms are small, but beautiful. However, they have an unpleasant smell like bugs, thus the name.
In garden culture, it seems to be rather adaptable. A good place is near the edge of a pond.
Generally, the middle european species O. coriophora ssp. coriophora seems to prefer more moisture than the southern species O. coriophora ssp. fragans. This species can't bear any frost, either.
