Disa uniflora
The most popular of about 200 species which grow in southeast Africa. This orchid has a sad past, because it was stolen from the nature biotopes in large amounts. From a rosette, a stem with up to three large red flowers emerges. The plant can be cultivated easily in a Sphagnum bed with a little lime. It can create runners and multiply vegetatively. It doesn't like frost, so container culture or a good winter protection are required.
Galearis spectabilis
This orchid of the east USA has two oval leaves and beautiful Orchis-like violet and white blossoms. The japanese G. cyclochila has one leaf and pink blossoms. Both like a shady place and lime in the soil, but only G. spectabilis is hardy enough for culture outdoors. Snails like both species, so be careful.
